Lykoi Age Calculator
Recent breed (formally established 2011 in Tennessee) defined by a natural coat mutation that produces a patchy, partially-hairless "werewolf" appearance. Black with white roan ticking is the standard color. The hairlessness comes in cycles — the breed molts to near-bald periodically and regrows. Lykoi typically weigh 6–12 lb (2.7–5.4 kg) at adulthood, with a typical indoor lifespan of 12–15 years.

How long do Lykoi live?
Indoor Lykoi typically live 12–15 years, with a median lifespan around 14 years. Outdoor-only or indoor-outdoor cats average closer to 6 years regardless of breed — trauma (vehicles, predators), infectious disease (FIV, FeLV), and toxin exposure account for the gap. Within indoor lifestyles, the strongest modifiable longevity factors are body condition (BCS 4–5/9 — most indoor cats trend overweight), dental care from kittenhood (gingivitis and resorptive lesions accumulate silently from age 3), and lower urinary tract management (wet-food rotation reduces FLUTD risk in neutered males).
Origins of the Lykoi
Founded in 2010 when Tennessee veterinarian Dr Johnny Gobble examined two roan-patterned partially-hairless feral kittens from rural Virginia and recognized the appearance as a heritable mutation distinct from the recessive hairless gene of the Sphynx. Gobble named the breed Lykoi from the Greek lykos (wolf) for the werewolf-like appearance and partnered with Tennessee shelter operators to identify additional founding cats from feral colonies across the southeastern United States. Genetic analysis (Buckley et al., 2017) confirmed the Lykoi mutation is in a previously uncharacterized gene producing hair-follicle dysplasia rather than complete follicle absence - some follicles produce hair while others do not, and the cat cyclically molts to near-bald and regrows over weeks. TICA accepted the breed for preliminary recognition in 2012 and advanced to championship status in 2017. Black-with-roan-white-ticking is the only accepted color. Outcrossing to black domestic shorthairs is permitted to maintain gene pool diversity. Long-term health data remains limited because the breed is recent.
How a Lykoi ages
Feline life-stage guidelines (AAFP/AAHA) treat cats as juniors through year 2, then prime adults to age 6, mature 7–10, senior 11–14, and geriatric 15+. By those landmarks a Lykoi at 7 is in the early-mature stage — about 44 in human-equivalent years.
Designer cats like the Lykoi are still consolidating their genetic identity, which means published lifespan ranges (12–15 years) are wider than for established breeds. Sourcing from breeders who maintain documented health records on their breeding cats meaningfully reduces the variance.

Lykoi weight chart
Adult weight for the Lykoi typically falls between 6–12 lb (2.7–5.4 kg). Weight outside this range is worth a vet conversation: BCS 4–5/9 (a thin fat layer over palpable ribs, visible waist from above, slight abdominal tuck) is the goal regardless of where in the breed range your individual cat lands.
| Stage | Typical weight (Lykoi) | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| 8 weeks (kitten) | ~1.8–2.6 lb | Trajectory matters more than absolute weight. Weigh weekly. |
| 6 months | ~6.6–9.0 lb | Most cats at ~65% of adult weight by 6 months. |
| 12 months | ~10.2–12.0 lb | Most cats fully grown. Maine Coons and Ragdolls continue to ~3-4 years. |
| Adult (1y+) | 6–12 lb | Hold steady at BCS 4-5. Indoor cats prone to weight gain; meal-feeding beats free-feeding for control. |
Stage weights are kitten-growth-curve approximations. Individual cats vary ±20% from these midpoints. For ideal weight + weight-loss math, use the ideal-weight calculator with current weight + BCS.
Care notes for Lykoi
- Hair follicle dysplasia — the partial-hairlessness is caused by abnormal hair follicles; not all follicles produce hair, and those that do may shed cyclically
- Skin care — exposed skin needs weekly bathing to manage oil buildup; sunburn risk on bald patches; indoor-only recommended
- Cold intolerance — minimal coat insulation; needs warm sleeping environment
- Very new breed — long-term health data is limited; no widespread breed-specific genetic conditions documented yet but the breed is too young to know
- Outcrossing to black domestic shorthairs is permitted by TICA to keep the gene pool open
- Weekly brushing is enough for the coat; daily during shedding seasons.
This is general breed-aware guidance. Always discuss specific concerns with your veterinarian.
Lykoi life-stage milestones
AAFP's generic kitten/adult/senior bands miss the breed-specific timing windows. The stages below are calibrated for the Lykoi:
- 8 weeks (kitten arrival): Coat may not show full werewolf appearance until 4-6 months. Standard vaccination protocol. Establish climate control - minimal coat insulation means warmth matters from day one. Begin weekly bathing routine.
- 6 months (adolescence): Coat cycles consolidate - cyclical near-baldness and regrowth becomes evident. Spay/neuter window. First cardiac auscultation. Begin sun-protection routine - indoor-only with limited window exposure.
- 1 year (young adult): Skeletally mature at 6-12 lb. Baseline bloodwork. Annual cardiac auscultation. Establish lifelong climate control plus weekly bathing routine.
- 3 years (prime adult): Annual cardiac auscultation. Skin care intensifies. Continue weekly bathing to manage oil buildup. The breed is too recent for long-term breed-specific health data.
- 10 years (mature/senior): Senior status. Annual senior bloodwork. Skin cancer surveillance becomes important - exposed skin accumulates UV damage. Continue dermatology checks.
- 12 years (geriatric): Limited long-term data - the breed is too recent to fully characterize geriatric care. Cognitive dysfunction screening. Quality-of-life focus: warmth, skin maintenance, dental care.

Lykoi age FAQ
How long do Lykoi live?
Indoor Lykoi typically live 12–15 years, with a median lifespan around 14 years. Outdoor-only or indoor-outdoor cats average closer to 6 years regardless of breed — trauma (vehicles, predators), infectious disease (FIV, FeLV), and toxin exposure account for the gap. How old is a 7-year-old Lykoi in human years?
Using the AAFP/AAHA formula, a 7-year-old Lykoi is approximately 44 human years old. Try the calculator above with your cat's actual age, months, and lifestyle for a precise answer.
What is the typical lifespan of a Lykoi?
Indoor Lykoi typically live 12–15 years. Designer cats like the Lykoi are still consolidating their genetic identity, which means published lifespan ranges (12–15 years) are wider than for established breeds. Sourcing from breeders who maintain documented health records on their breeding cats meaningfully reduces the variance.
When does a Lykoi become a senior cat?
Most cats — including Lykoi — are considered senior starting at 11 years per AAFP guidelines. Mature stage (subtle age-related changes) begins around 7 years. Super-senior (geriatric) is 15+ years.
Are Lykoi good indoor-only cats?
Yes — almost all domestic cats, including Lykoi, do best as indoor-only cats. Indoor lifespan averages ~15 years versus ~6 for outdoor-only cats, and the breed's quality of life isn't significantly different indoors with appropriate enrichment (vertical space, play, window perches).
Is the Lykoi the same as a Sphynx?
They are completely different mutations. The Sphynx is genuinely hairless (technically a fine vellus coat) from a recessive mutation that affects every hair follicle. The Lykoi mutation causes hair-follicle dysplasia instead — some follicles produce hair while others do not, and the cat cyclically molts to near-bald and regrows. Lykois show patchy fur with bald areas around the face and feet, while Sphynxes are uniformly nearly bald across the whole body. Care overlaps in basics (weekly bathing, sun protection, warmth), but the two breeds are not interchangeable in practice.
