Senior pet calculators — aging brings math you didn't sign up for

Senior pets need different math than adults. Their metabolism slows, their water intake patterns shift, and tiny weight changes signal big problems. These calculators help you spot what's normal aging vs what needs a vet visit.

When does "senior" actually start?

Senior status is breed-size-dependent for dogs:

  • Toy breeds (under 20 lb / 9 kg): senior at 10-12 years. Geriatric at 14+.
  • Small breeds (20-40 lb / 9-18 kg): senior at 9-11 years.
  • Medium breeds (40-60 lb / 18-27 kg): senior at 8-10 years.
  • Large breeds (60-90 lb / 27-41 kg): senior at 7-9 years.
  • Giant breeds (Great Dane, Mastiff, Newfoundland): senior at 6-7 years. Geriatric at 9+.

For cats, the AAFP defines senior as 11-14 years and geriatric as 15+. Indoor-only cats live 4-7 years longer on average than indoor-outdoor cats, so the same age looks different by lifestyle.

Calculators that matter most for seniors

Senior-specific things to watch for

Three numbers matter more than any others in senior pets:

  1. Weight: Unintentional loss of more than 10% body weight in a senior pet is rarely "just aging". Common medical causes: hyperthyroidism (cats), kidney disease, diabetes, cancer. Weigh monthly.
  2. Water intake: Sudden increase in thirst is the #1 sign of kidney disease, diabetes, or Cushing's syndrome. Use the water intake calculator to establish a baseline before changes happen.
  3. Mobility: Reluctance to jump (cats) or trouble with stairs (dogs) often appears 1-2 years before pain meds get prescribed. Earlier intervention with weight management + joint supplements is cheaper and more effective.

Senior nutrition + joint support

Most seniors benefit from glucosamine + chondroitin supplementation starting around 7 years (large dogs) or 10 years (cats). Cosequin is the most-studied veterinary brand. Combine with a real orthopedic-grade bed (not a thin foam topper) — the most-comfortable hours of a senior dog's day are the 12-14 they spend lying down.

Joint support + orthopedic comfort

The 2-component senior care upgrade: vet-formulated joint supplement + therapeutic-grade memory foam bed. Both are everyday-quality-of-life multipliers, not luxuries.
