Origins of the Nebelung
Founded in 1986 when American breeder Cora Cobb of Nebelheim Cattery in Colorado received a longhaired blue kitten named Siegfried from a Russian Blue x black domestic cross. A second longhaired blue kitten from an unrelated litter (Brunhilde) provided the founding pair, and Cobb began a breeding program selecting for longhair Russian Blue type. The breed name derives from the German Nebel meaning mist - reflecting the soft silvery appearance of the long coat. TICA accepted the breed in 1987 and granted championship status in 1997. CFA continues to decline separate recognition, classifying Nebelungs as longhair Russian Blues. Outcrossing to Russian Blues remains permitted by TICA to maintain coat-color and type consistency. The breed remains uncommon globally - fewer than 100 active breeders worldwide - and the gene pool reflects the underlying Russian Blue population genetics.
