The distinctive blue-black tongue (shared only with the Shar-Pei) and stilted gait from straight rear legs are ancient breed-defining features. The Chow reached England in the late 18th century via the East India Company, and Queen Victorias acquisition of a Chow in 1865 cemented Western interest. AKC recognition came in 1903.
